A Fabric of Discipline: Wartime Denim Standards

During the war, denim used for military garments was tightly regulated. Each piece had to clearly specify its weight, either in “yards per pound” or “ounces per square yard.” Labels also had to state whether a garment was “preshrunk”—a designation closely monitored through random quality checks. If shrinkage exceeded just 2%, it was reclassified as “unshrunk.”

Military apparel was divided into two strict categories:

Garments that met the Armed Forces’ full list of requirements—a list that was both exhaustive and exacting.

or “Seconds”: Garments that failed to meet these standards, considered substandard and not suitable for frontline use.

A Thoughtful Reinterpretation

Inspired specifically by a 1930s Army jacket, the pocket design of our Short Sleeve Deck Shirt references a detail from that era—the pocket entry positioned closer to the garment’s centerline. For the modern wearer, we’ve updated this detail to allow easier access and function, placing pockets more naturally at the sides.

Made in lightweight indigo reverse twill, the shirt features a relaxed silhouette with a popover fit, side vents, and a soft-washed finish. It’s breathable, versatile, and built to endure—without sacrificing comfort or style.
